Myanmar’s detained former leader Aung San Suu Kyi moved from prison to house arrest


A spokesman for the Myanmar military junta said that detained former leader Aung San Suu Kyi has been transferred from prison to house arrest.

This shift is intended to be a precautionary measure during the hot weather in the country.

Major General Zaw Min Tun said: “Since the weather is very hot, it is not just Aung San Suu Kyi. For all those who need precautions, especially elderly prisoners, we are working to protect them from heatstroke.”

Kim Aris, Suu Kyi’s son, previously spoke about the deterioration of his mother’s health in prison, especially her gums.

The 78-year-old Nobel laureate faces a 27-year prison sentence on various crime charges ranging from bribery to violating the country’s communications law. She denies all wrongdoing.

She was arrested after the February 1, 2021 coup by the military junta.

National unity government [NUG]A coalition of anti-junta groups called for the unconditional release of Suu Kyi and U Win Myint, the ousted president of Myanmar.

There have also previously been reports that Ms Suu Kyi has been moved to house arrest.

Mr. Aris was quoted as saying guardian In September last year: “They tried these tactics to appease the wider international community by saying she was being transferred to house arrest, which is absolutely not true. She is still in prison.”
